DePuy Blames Doctors for Hip Replacement Failures

Prior to the recall, DePuy insisted that instances of device failure were due to incorrect positioning of the implant by surgeons, but in reality the ASR’s “cup” is so shallow that achieving the correct angle of insertion, even for highly skilled surgeons, has proven extremely difficult if not impossible. The result of this design flaw is a cascade of symptoms for the patient including, but not limited to:

  • hip, groin, and lower back pain,
  • pain on the opposite side of the body due to compensation in the patient’s posture,
  • debilitating loss of function and flexibility,
  • and an overall instability or sense that “something isn’t right”

Combined, these factors lead to a higher incidence of hip implant loosening, dislocation, and even breaks in the adjacent bone. Damage of this sort and the potential for bone necrosis greatly complicates attempts at secondary revision surgery. In the vast majority of cases, patients face life-long debilitation as a result of the ASR’s failure.
