Over 350 Lawsuits Filed Against DePuy in August

The company DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of the corporate giant Johnson & Johnson has seen a spate of lawsuits filed in the wake of the ASR hip replacement recall. According to a recent news report, there were more than 350 cases filed in an Ohio Federal court in August 2011, all of them directly tied to a case undergoing pre-trial proceedings in the Northern District of Ohio.

DePuy announced the global recall of the ASR hip implant system in August of last year and is experiencing a wave of litigation from hip implant victims worldwide. Lawsuits filed by ASR patients have been consolidated in multi-district litigation under Judge David Katz in order to eliminate delays associated with transfer of cases in or removed to other federal district courts to this Court, and to promote judicial efficiency.

There have been more than 700 lawsuits filed against the company in the last two months and over 1,700 individuals have filed a DePuy hip recall lawsuit since the MDL allowed direct filings in January.
